| Salt glazing is a very old process originating in Germany about 500 years ago. Most early American stoneware was glazed with salt. Salt glazed pottery is glazed during the firing process. When the kiln reaches about 2,250 degrees F, salt is thrown inside. The salt changes from solid to a vapor which sticks to the clay, forming a glass coating on the pot or plate. Because the vapor is carried through the items by the flame, many unique colors and irregularities occur on the pottery. No two firings are ever identical. There is no lead or toxic element used in the pottery, it is all tested food safe and is oven-proof. |
